Monument to the Unknown Soldier
The Unknown Soldier Monument in Baghdad is a complex monument built in 1980 that includes a large, dome-like structure representing a falling shield, a spiral tower, and a seven-layered cube beneath the shield. It is located atop an artificial hill and symbolizes the martyrs of the Iran–Iraq War, with a separate museum located underground accessible through the cube. Visitors can see the shield and cube above ground, with an underground museum and other facilities below. The monument was designed by Iraqi sculptor Khaled al-Rahal, with the Italian architect Marcello D'Olivo overseeing its construction.

A museum is situated underground, connected to the cube above by a shaft with windows. Visitors in the museum can look up through the shaft to see the cube. The monument features a steel flagpole clad in Murano glass panels that display the national flag colors.
